This week, we get into “holiday season” mode with the first of three great stories about Thanksgiving.

The story of the Mayflower pilgrims is one that has much depth to it. When we think of Thanksgiving, we think of turkeys, Indians, pumpkin pie, pilgrims, the Mayflower and other symbols of holiday… but what we don’t think about is the reason behind why the pilgrims left their home to venture to a New World. They faced the perils of the sea, sickness, famine and for some death just to start anew in a land they knew little about.

This week’s program, “The Stepping Stones” is the story of William Brewster, the ruling elder of the Scrooby congregation, who had started a printing venture that specialized in printing Puritan Gospel tracts– tracts that were illegal in England at the time. So it was that as the Pilgrims made ready to sail, Brewster was in hiding while the king’s soldiers sought to imprison him, and he was actually smuggled aboard the Mayflower.

“Listen my children, and you shall hear of the midnight ride of Paul Revere…”
… So begins Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s classic “Midnight Ride of Paul Revere”.

Generations of schoolkids once thrilled to this beloved poem and memorized whole sections of it… yet I doubt most of our kids these days have ever heard more than the first couple of lines, if even that.

So… This week, let’s enjoy the great actor Frederic March’s dramatic rendition of this great American poem, beloved by generations of young readers.

It’s a great way to get “into” your American History this fresh new school year!

Here we are with two new “Living Books for the Ears” programs for you! This week…

THE PLACE WHERE TIME BEGINS:

This story has nothing to do with the beginning of the world, which the title might lead you to believe. Rather it has to do with the beginning of the DAY. You see, every day time begins atop a small hill in Grenwich Park in England… the site of
Grenwich Observatory, the starting place of the hours. Here’s the fascinating story of why and how Grenwich became
the focal point for our reckoning of time.

THE FATHER OF MEDICINE:

Next, we travel back to ancient Greece, and learn the story of Hippocrates, who first separated the science of medicine
from superstition and philosophy — and became the forerunner of the modern physician. (Just give a listen to
the weird superstitions folks once had about the causes of their illness… what a hoot!)

Here’s the link for you…
